Somebody tells you what not to buy, somebody tells you where you must go, and by the end, you have received plenty of instructions but very little understanding.

Let us clear the confusion. What should you actually do for your ancestors? Which customs have a specific purpose, and where has fear taken over? Before we talk about rituals, dates or donations, let us begin with the people we are remembering.

Your ancestors are being remembered. Why are you frightened?

Your father loved you when he was alive. Your mother worried when you missed a meal. Your grandparents blessed you every time you touched their feet. Now somebody tells you that during Pitru Paksha, these very people will become angry because you bought a refrigerator. Really? Your mother spent her life making sure you ate properly, and now she wants your food to spoil?

From Sunday, 27th September 2026, the Krishna Paksha Shraddha observances begin, continuing until Sarva Pitru Amavasya on Saturday, 10th October. And along with this sacred period will come the familiar warnings: don’t buy anything, don’t move house, don’t start work, don’t shave, don’t do this, don’t do that. By the time some people finish explaining Pitru Paksha, you begin wondering whether you are allowed to breathe without consulting somebody!

Let us clear this confusion. We will understand what Pitru Paksha means, why the death tithi matters, what you can do at home, and where specialised rituals such as Tripindi Shraddha and Narayan Nagbali fit in. But keep one thought with you throughout this conversation: a period dedicated to your ancestors deserves your respect. It does not deserve to be turned into a festival of fear.

What Pitru Paksha actually means

Pitru refers to our ancestors, and Paksha means a lunar fortnight. So Pitru Paksha is the fortnight dedicated to ancestral remembrance. Our departed parents, grandparents and the generations before them are part of that remembrance. People whose names we know, and people whose names disappeared from family memory long before we were born.

Think about it. You know your mobile password, your Wi-Fi password and perhaps the delivery person’s name. But how many of us know the names of our great-grandparents? I am not saying this to make you feel guilty. I am saying that life moves so quickly that sometimes we remember everything except where we came from.

Pitru Paksha asks us to pause. In Hindu tradition, this is a time for Shraddha, Tarpana, Pinda Daan, food offerings and charity in remembrance of the departed. Whether you understand ancestral blessings spiritually or approach the period through gratitude and family memory, its message is powerful: do not become so busy enjoying your life that you forget the people through whom you received it.

Let me also clear up the dates. Purnima Shraddha falls on Saturday, 26th September 2026. Pratipada Shraddha, beginning the Krishna Paksha sequence we are discussing, falls on Sunday, 27th September. Sarva Pitru Amavasya is on Saturday, 10th October. That explains why you may see both September 26 and September 27 mentioned. These are lunar observances, so don’t insist that the fortnight must fit exactly fifteen midnight-to-midnight calendar dates. For the actual ritual day and time, especially outside India, use the Panchang for your location.

Shraddha begins with sincerity

The ritual called Shraddha is rooted in shraddha—faith, sincerity and reverence. The outer action gives expression to something within you. You are saying, “You are no longer sitting beside me, but you have not disappeared from my life. I remember you. I am grateful.”

People sometimes become so anxious about the arrangement that they lose this feeling completely. Was the plate correct? Was the bowl correct? Did we buy the right quantity? Meanwhile, everyone in the family has argued three times before the priest arrives! Follow the procedure carefully, certainly. But leave some room in the ceremony for the person you are remembering.

Broadly speaking, Tarpana involves ritual offerings of water; Pinda Daan involves prescribed food offerings called pindas; and Shraddha can include these and other observances according to the tradition followed. These are related practices, but their precise sequence and requirements are not identical in every family. If you want to perform formal Shraddha Vidhi, learn your family’s procedure from a knowledgeable priest. A general blog can explain its meaning; it cannot supply every family’s complete ritual manual.

And please remember this: a modest ceremony performed sincerely is not something to be ashamed of. Your financial capacity does not measure your love for your parents.

Why the tithi matters more than the calendar date

Suppose someone passed away on the 8th of March. The family may remember that date every year, and there is nothing wrong with that. But the traditional annual Shraddha is normally determined through the Hindu lunar calendar—the relevant lunar month, fortnight and death tithi—not simply March 8 every year.

During Pitru Paksha, the corresponding death tithi is generally important, with certain special observances and exceptions depending on the circumstances and tradition. So please do not hear the word “Dashami,” open any month containing Dashami, and declare the matter settled! For an actual observance, have the details checked properly.

If you have the date and approximate time of death but do not know the tithi, a competent priest or Panchang practitioner can help determine it. If the tithi is genuinely unknown, Sarva Pitru Amavasya is an established occasion for collective ancestral observance. In 2026, that is 10th October. Not knowing the tithi is a reason to seek guidance, not a reason to stop remembering your parents.

Both your departed mother and father can be remembered, following their relevant observances. And the remembrance need not stop with them. Your grandparents and earlier generations are also part of your lineage.

Your home is a meaningful place to remember them

For regular Shraddha, wherever practical and consistent with your family tradition, I personally prefer the idea of performing it at home. That is my recommendation; I am not claiming that every Hindu tradition ranks every home ceremony above every pilgrimage observance.

Why do I like the home so much for this? Because remembrance becomes personal. Perhaps you still have your father’s chair. Perhaps your mother kept her prayer books in a particular cupboard. You remember her calling you for lunch. You remember your father asking why the electricity bill was so high when, according to him, nobody ever switched anything off!

These small things carry an entire relationship. You do not have to purchase an airline ticket before those memories become sacred. You can arrange the appropriate home ritual, invite a knowledgeable priest if needed, and remember your family peacefully.

Pilgrimage has its own respected place. Go if you wish to go, or if a particular prescribed rite calls for it. But do not allow anyone to tell you that your regular home Shraddha has no value merely because you did not travel somewhere. Gratitude is not measured in kilometres.

A practical offering when elaborate ritual is not possible

Some of you live abroad. Some cannot find a suitable priest. Some are elderly, unwell, short of money or carrying too many responsibilities. Please do not turn these practical difficulties into a conclusion that you have failed your ancestors.

If you can follow your family’s formal procedure, do so. If you cannot, my practical spiritual recommendation is to remember them consciously and help someone in their name. Such charity is a meaningful expression of devotion; I am not declaring that it automatically replaces every formal obligation in every tradition.

Here is one offering I suggest, if it is within your means: 5 kilograms of rice, 1 kilogram of cow’s ghee, 2 kilograms of suji, one large pumpkin, 2 kilograms of arhar dal, 1 kilogram of kala chana, fresh vegetables, 2 kilograms of sugar and ₹1,100 as financial help. Give these to a genuinely needy person or family who can use them.

Those quantities are my suggested donation, not a compulsory scriptural shopping list. If you can give less, give less. If a family needs something different, respond to its actual need. Your parents are not sitting with a weighing machine checking whether the rice is exactly five kilograms! Please do not borrow money to prove that you loved them.

Before giving, take a quiet moment. Remember their names. Say, “I offer this in gratitude for the life and care I received. May my departed family members be at peace, and may this offering help someone today.” Then give respectfully. The person receiving your help deserves dignity, not an instruction to pose for twenty photographs.

Sacred does not mean that daily life must stop

Now we come to the fear that has made this whole subject unnecessarily complicated. “Acharya ji, can I buy something? Can I travel? Can I relocate? Can I begin work?” My approach is straightforward: necessary life does not need to come to a standstill.

Your refrigerator has stopped working? Replace it if you need to. Your laptop has failed and your livelihood depends on it? Arrange another one. Your ancestors did not raise you so that you could lose your job while waiting for the calendar to give your laptop permission to function.

If your company transfers you, you can relocate. If your lease ends, you may have to move. Understand the difference between physically moving into accommodation because life requires it and choosing a date for a ceremonial Griha Pravesh. The ceremony may follow your family’s muhurta rules; your immediate need for a roof over your head is a practical matter.

Many families traditionally postpone weddings, major celebrations and selected auspicious ceremonies during this period. Respect that if it is your practice. The fortnight has a particular focus: ancestral remembrance. But a tradition of postponing a celebration is not evidence that every necessary purchase will bring bad luck.

Quiet does not mean negative. Serious does not mean dangerous. Ancestral does not mean inauspicious. When I call Pitru Paksha auspicious, I mean spiritually meaningful—a valuable time for gratitude, charity and reflection. I am not saying that every moment is automatically a suitable muhurta for every ceremony.

Your business and your beard

Suppose a business has already signed contracts. Employees are joining, rent has started, and customers are waiting. My advice is not to abandon those commitments merely because somebody declares the entire fortnight dangerous. Remember your ancestors, offer your prayers and proceed responsibly. If you want a formal ceremonial inauguration at a separately selected muhurta, you can discuss that as a distinct matter.

A business needs planning, service, sound decisions and consistent work. Do not promise yourself that a ritual guarantees success, and do not convince yourself that Pitru Paksha guarantees failure. Neither belief is a substitute for running the business properly.

Then comes the question about shaving. Some families, and particularly people undertaking specific rites, observe restrictions concerning haircuts, shaving, diet and conduct. If you have taken on such an observance, understand and follow its rules. But do not frighten every other person by announcing that their deceased father will stop blessing them because they visited the barber.

Your respect for your father cannot be measured by the length of your beard. Otherwise, the man who forgot his razor would automatically become the most devoted son in the family! Keep the discipline if it belongs to your practice. Keep the devotion too. And please keep some common sense.

Tripindi Shraddha and the confusion about three years

Now let us discuss a specialised rite: Tripindi Shraddha. It is an ancestral ceremony performed with prayers for the peace of departed souls. The procedure described in Trimbakeshwar traditions includes worship of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Some priestly traditions recommend it when ancestral offerings have remained neglected for three consecutive years.

Here is the distinction I want you to remember: “My father died three years ago” and “the prescribed ancestral offerings have not been performed for three years” are different situations. Reaching the third death anniversary does not, by itself, establish a universal requirement to visit three places or perform this ceremony.

If someone recommends Tripindi Shraddha, ask why it applies to your family’s situation. Understand which tradition and procedure they are following. It generally takes one day, and it is not confined to Pitru Paksha. Particular tithis and lunar months are selected under the relevant tradition, so confirm an appropriate date with the priest conducting it rather than assuming every day is interchangeable.

These explanations describe religious beliefs and ritual purposes. They do not establish that missed offerings have caused a business loss or a family argument. A responsible explanation should help you understand what you are doing, not leave you frightened of your own parents.

Narayan Nagbali: Two rites with distinct purposes

Narayan Nagbali combines Narayan Bali and Nag Bali. Narayan Bali is traditionally associated with prayers for the departed, particularly following an unnatural or untimely death. Nag Bali is an expiatory rite associated with the religious belief concerning the sin of killing a snake, especially a cobra. In the described procedure, symbolic forms made from flour or dough are used. No living snake is sacrificed.

The combined observance at Trimbakeshwar generally takes three days. Its starting date is selected according to the ritual muhurta. It is not simply an annual requirement for every family, nor should you assume that it must happen exactly three years after someone dies. Explain the circumstances and rites already completed to the priest, and confirm the appropriate timing before arranging travel.

Please be particularly sensitive when speaking to a grieving family. A tragic death is not permission to declare that their loved one is now harming them. These ceremonies are undertaken within a religious tradition with prayers for peace and release. They should not become a way of adding terror to grief.

Where specialised rites fit into the picture

If a specialised ceremony has been properly recommended, arrange it through experienced priests at a recognised Tirtha Kshetra—a sacred place of pilgrimage. You may enquire at Trimbakeshwar near Nashik, Gaya in Bihar, Gokarna in Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, or another established pilgrimage centre. Confirm that the particular centre performs the exact rite prescribed for you; these places and procedures are not automatically interchangeable.

The combined Narayan Nagbali observance we have discussed is especially associated with Trimbakeshwar. Narayan Bali performed separately and other ancestral rites may follow different local traditions. Therefore, say the full name of the ceremony when enquiring, and understand the arrangements before booking your journey.

This does not contradict my recommendation for regular Shraddha at home. A specialised rite may call for a particular setting and procedure. Your ordinary annual observance has its own place in family life. You do not have to turn every act of remembering your mother into a travel itinerary.

And completing a specialised ceremony should not become an excuse to forget your ancestors for the rest of your life. Ask about any continuing observances within your tradition. Gratitude itself does not expire when the ceremony ends.

Daughters, distance and difficult relationships

A daughter does not stop being a daughter because she gets married. She can remember her parents, pray for them, feed someone in their memory and keep their stories alive. Eligibility and procedure for particular formal rites vary between traditions, so obtain the relevant guidance. But please do not confuse a procedural question with a claim that a daughter’s love has no place in ancestral remembrance.

The same applies to distance. Living in Canada, America, Europe, Australia or anywhere else does not erase your relationship with your family. Use the local Panchang for formal observances, seek guidance where available, and do what you can sincerely. The absence of a priest should not become the absence of remembrance.

There is another situation we must acknowledge: not everyone had a loving relationship with their parents. Some people carry hurt, neglect or unresolved conflict. I will not tell you to invent happy memories you do not have. You can remember a life honestly, without excusing the harm that occurred. If it feels right, your prayer can be as simple as, “May you be at peace, and may I find peace in my own life.” You do not have to force forgiveness or an emotion you are not ready to feel.

And for those who are grieving deeply, you do not have to smile on command either. Tears are natural. Laughter at a warm memory is natural too. Remembering someone’s terrible singing or their habit of giving the same advice five times can bring a smile through the tears. Love has room for both.

Stop making the ancestors responsible for everything

Marriage is delayed—Pitru Dosha. Business is slow—Pitru Dosha. Brothers are arguing—Pitru Dosha. At this rate, even a missing television remote will become an ancestral matter! Please pause before assigning every difficulty to the departed.

Within astrology and religious traditions, people may interpret certain patterns through the language of ancestral obligations. But a difficulty by itself does not prove an ancestral cause. Do not use that explanation to ignore the practical situation in front of you, and do not accept promises that one ceremony will guarantee money, marriage, children or perfect health.

Above all, do not make your relationship with your ancestors a transaction. “I gave five kilograms of rice, now give me a promotion.” That is an order placed with a supplier. It is not gratitude. Remember them because they are part of your life, not only because you want something from them.

If you believe in their blessings, receive them with humility. And honour their memory through your conduct: look after the people who depend on you, help where you can, and stop feeding unnecessary family conflicts. A beautiful offering followed by an afternoon spent insulting your siblings deserves a little self-examination.

Enter this Pitru Paksha with a clear heart

This year, begin with something simple. Find out the relevant tithi. Arrange the observance your family follows, at home where appropriate. If elaborate ritual is not possible, remember the departed sincerely and offer practical help in their memory. If the tithi is unknown, seek guidance and keep Sarva Pitru Amavasya, 10th October, in mind.

Take out a photograph if that is part of your practice. Tell your children who that person was. Not only their name and the date they died—tell them how they lived. What made them laugh? What did they struggle through? What did they teach you? A photograph on the wall becomes much more meaningful when the next generation knows the person behind it.

And then continue living responsibly. Attend to your work. Make necessary purchases. Move if circumstances require it. Follow the disciplines you have chosen or undertaken, but do not spend the fortnight checking every ordinary action for an imaginary punishment.

Your ancestors deserve a place in your memory, not the blame for every fear in your mind.

The life they gave you

One day, you and I will also be remembered by people who outlive us. Perhaps our photographs will stand in somebody’s home. Perhaps somebody will prepare a meal in our memory. What would we hope for them? That they become frightened, quarrel about the arrangements and spend money they cannot afford? Or that they remember us with affection and live well?

That is the spirit I want you to carry into Pitru Paksha. Respect the tradition. Understand the ritual. Remember the person. Give what you can. And allow gratitude to become something you practise beyond a single day.

You can say, “Thank you for the life I received. Wherever you are, may you be at peace. May I use this life well.” There is great dignity in that prayer. It does not need fear to make it meaningful.

Because perhaps the greatest tribute you can offer your parents is not only what you place on a plate once a year. It is what you do with the life they gave you.

Jai Shri Ganesha.
