Many people assume that spirituality means you should not pay too much attention to money, calculations, business matters or the practical affairs of life.
But — that is NOT spirituality!
In fact, history itself has been witness to the fact that some of the greatest
spiritual masters were extremely practical people.
Take the example of Samarth Ramdas Swami. He did not simply speak about
meditation, devotion and God. He also emphasized the importance of physical
strength, discipline and practical living. He encouraged young men to build their
bodies and establish physical fitness because finally, it is through
this very body that you are going to perform your spiritual practices!
If the body collapses, how long will your chanting continue?
If your health collapses, how long will your meditation continue?
A few months back, one of my close followers connected with me on Instagram.
She told me, “Acharyaji, sometimes I may skip my lunch, but I never skip my
chanting.”
Now I completely understand her emotion. I appreciate her devotion, her
consistency and her dedication.
But this is exactly where many devotees misunderstand spirituality.
By neglecting your body, by constantly skipping your meals, by denying your
body the nourishment it requires, you may actually be causing pain and torture
to the very physical instrument through which you are trying to reach God!
And suppose tomorrow this negligence pushes you into some serious health
problem.
What happens then?
You enter into the vicious cycle of doctors, medicines, weakness, anxiety and
physical suffering — and eventually you may lose touch with the very spiritual
practices for which you were skipping your lunch and dinner in the first place!
So spirituality should NEVER make you foolish.
True spirituality should make you more aware, more disciplined and more
practical.
There is another beautiful incident associated with the life of Sant Eknath
Maharaj, one of the greatest spiritual saints of India.
Eknath Maharaj was not someone who escaped from worldly responsibilities in
the name of spirituality. He understood both — the material world as well as the
spiritual world.
It is said that during his younger days, when he would visit his Guru Janardhan
Swami, his Guru would sometimes give him practical responsibilities, including
matters connected with accounts and money.
And on one occasion, when there was a mistake in calculation, his Guru corrected
him strongly and reminded him about the importance of being absolutely careful
and accurate in worldly dealings.
Now why am I sharing all these examples with you?
Because, my friends, this is exactly the message of Mercury transiting through
Virgo.
Mercury says:
BE ACCURATE.
BE CALCULATIVE.
BE OBSERVANT.
BE PRACTICAL.
And most importantly —
DO NOT MIX EMOTIONS WITH BUSINESS.
Because the moment you start bringing unnecessary emotions into professional
dealings, financial calculations, agreements, negotiations or business decisions —
that is when you start making mistakes.
There is an old saying:
Never mix pleasure with work.
And Mercury in Virgo goes one step further and says:
Never mix unnecessary emotions with business.
You may be the most spiritual person in the world.
You may chant ten thousand mantras.
You may meditate for three hours.
But when you are signing a contract — READ THE CONTRACT.
When you are lending somebody money — KEEP THE RECORD.
When you are running a business — CHECK THE NUMBERS.
When somebody owes you money — DO THE CALCULATION.
When you are taking an important decision — USE YOUR BRAIN.
Don’t say, “But Acharyaji, I trust him.”
Trust is beautiful.
But trust does not mean foolishness.
Spirituality does not mean that you should stop using your intelligence.
And this is something our great saints have repeatedly reminded us.
There is a powerful Marathi teaching often expressed through the words:
“Prapanch Karava Netka.”
Meaning — first learn to conduct your worldly life properly.
Take care of your responsibilities.
Take care of your family.
Take care of your finances.
Take care of your health.
Take care of your commitments.
Do your work sincerely.
And then walk deeper into spirituality.
Because spirituality should NEVER become an escape route for people who are
simply afraid of facing their responsibilities.
Sometimes people fail miserably in their material life, become frustrated with
everything, and then suddenly declare:
“I am no longer interested in this material world. I am becoming spiritual.”
But ask yourself honestly —
Did you choose spirituality because God called you?
Or did you choose spirituality because you could no longer handle the challenges
of practical life?
There is a huge difference between the two.
If you come towards spirituality merely because you are running away from your
responsibilities, then eventually those same unresolved responsibilities will come
chasing you again.
You cannot escape Karma by changing your vocabulary.
You cannot escape responsibility by wearing spiritual clothes.
You cannot escape practical life by chanting spiritual words.
And that is why I have always emphasized:
NEVER ESCAPE FROM YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES.
Face them.
Complete them.
Learn from them.
Become stronger through them.
Because if you continuously escape from what life is asking you to deal with, you
may eventually create even greater suffering for yourself — and instead of
becoming spiritual, you may simply end up making an ass of yourself!
So my friends, now that I have helped you understand why being PRACTICAL is
also deeply spiritual — and why you must stop becoming an emotional fool in
situations where intelligence, calculation and clarity are required — understand the powerful message that Mercury’s transit through Virgo from
7th September to 26th September brings for each zodiac sign.
Because during this transit, Mercury is going to ask every one of us one simple
question:
ARE YOU THINKING CLEARLY — OR ARE YOUR EMOTIONS THINKING FOR
YOU?
Let us begin with Aries
ARIES
Mercury in Virgo is finally helping you think straight about work, health and
daily responsibilities.
The recent Leo–Ketu and Aquarius–Rahu axis may have made you wonder, “What
exactly am I doing here?” — now that fog starts clearing.
You may become much sharper in handling colleagues, schedules, pending work
and even small health matters.
This is a good time to correct mistakes instead of emotionally defending them —
yes, even Aries can occasionally be wrong!
Use these days to organize your life, because Mercury now wants efficiency, not
drama.
TAURUS
For Taurus, Mercury in Virgo brings much better clarity in matters of love,
children, creativity and personal decisions.
The previous Rahu–Ketu influence may have made certain emotional situations
unnecessarily complicated.
Now you may finally understand who genuinely deserves your attention and who
was simply consuming your mental data pack!
Creative ideas can become practical and something that was only floating in your
head may now take proper shape.
Think before reacting in love matters, because this transit rewards intelligence
much more than emotional stubbornness.
GEMINI
Gemini, your own planet Mercury is now becoming very comfortable in Virgo,
and that itself can feel like your brain has finally received a software update.
Confusion regarding home, property, family decisions or relocation matters may
start reducing.
The recent Leo–Ketu and Aquarius–Rahu axis could have made communication
scattered or decisions slightly unpredictable.
Now you can sit down, check the facts, make the calculation and say, “Okay, THIS
actually makes sense.”
Use this transit to organize your home as well as your mind — both may
currently require some cleaning!
CANCER
Cancer, Mercury in Virgo is asking you to communicate with logic before allowing
emotions to take over the microphone.
The previous Rahu–Ketu axis may have made some conversations confusing,
misunderstood or unnecessarily intense.
Now clarity can return in paperwork, travel plans, communication, contracts and
decisions involving siblings.
You may suddenly realize that half the problem was not the situation — it was the
way everybody was interpreting it!
Speak clearly, write things down and don’t assume people can automatically
understand what is going on inside your heart.
LEO
Leo, Mercury moving away from Ketu in your sign is actually very important
because your thinking can become considerably clearer now.
During the previous phase you may have felt detached, doubtful or strangely
uncertain about decisions that normally look simple to you.
Mercury in Virgo now shifts your attention towards money, savings, family
matters and practical planning.
This is the time to check your accounts carefully — because confidence is
wonderful, but your bank balance still prefers mathematics!
Avoid impulsive spending and make financial decisions with facts rather than
pride.
VIRGO
Virgo, Mercury is entering your own sign, so naturally your analytical machinery
becomes much stronger.
After the confusion created by the Leo–Ketu and Aquarius–Rahu axis, you may
finally feel that your brain is returning home.
Decisions regarding career, health, appearance, relationships and personal
direction can become much clearer.
Just remember — clarity is good, but analysing one WhatsApp message fourteen
different ways is not spirituality, it is overthinking!
Use this powerful transit to make decisions, organize priorities and move ahead
confidently.
LIBRA
Libra, Mercury in Virgo may quietly help you understand what has been
bothering you beneath the surface.
The previous Rahu–Ketu axis could have created strange mental restlessness,
confusion in relationships or unnecessary internal noise.
Now you may start seeing clearly which worries are genuine and which ones
were simply products of an overactive mind.
Expenses also deserve attention, so please don’t call every purchase “self-care” —
Mercury is watching the bill!
This is an excellent time for introspection, planning and quietly correcting your
course.
SCORPIO
Scorpio, Mercury in Virgo can bring excellent clarity regarding friendships,
professional networks, income and future goals.
The Rahu–Ketu axis may recently have made certain people or plans look more
promising than they actually were.
Now you may suddenly discover who is genuinely useful, who is dependable and
who was basically giving PowerPoint presentations without results!
Financial gains can improve through intelligent networking and practical
planning.
Choose your associations carefully because Mercury now wants quality
connections, not unnecessary social noise.
SAGITTARIUS
Sagittarius, Mercury in Virgo puts a strong spotlight on career decisions,
professional reputation and practical direction.
The recent Rahu–Ketu influence may have created confusion about what step to
take next or whom to trust professionally.
Now your decision-making becomes sharper and you may finally see the
difference between an opportunity and a beautifully packaged headache.
Talk less, observe more and make sure every professional commitment is clearly
documented.
This transit can help you make very sensible career moves if you stop rushing
and start calculating.
CAPRICORN
Capricorn, Mercury in Virgo can bring clarity regarding higher studies, travel,
legal matters, teachers and your larger life direction.
The previous Rahu–Ketu axis may have created uncertainty regarding money,
beliefs or long-term decisions.
Now information starts connecting properly and something that looked confusing
earlier may suddenly become obvious.
This is a wonderful time to learn, plan travel or take advice — but please verify
facts before forwarding that “very important message” from somebody’s uncle!
Mercury in Virgo rewards knowledge that is practical, verified and useful.
AQUARIUS
Aquarius, Mercury has finally moved away from Rahu in your sign axis, and that
itself can reduce a considerable amount of mental noise.
You may now get better clarity in joint finances, taxes, investments, debts,
insurance or emotionally complicated situations.
Some matters that looked mysterious may become surprisingly simple once you
actually check the documents.
This is not the time to guess — if numbers are involved, calculate; if papers are
involved, read them.
Mercury in Virgo can help you solve hidden problems, provided you stop
imagining ten possibilities and deal with the one that is actually happening.
PISCES
Pisces, Mercury in Virgo directly activates relationships, partnerships and
important one-to-one decisions.
The recent Rahu–Ketu axis may have created emotional confusion about yourself,
other people and where certain relationships were heading.
Now conversations can become clearer and you may finally understand what the
other person actually wants.
Please don’t expect people to read your soul — sometimes a normal five-minute
conversation works much faster!
Use this transit to bring logic, transparency and practical understanding into both
personal and professional partnerships.
So my friends, with Pisces we complete the impact of Mercury’s transit in Virgo
for all twelve zodiac signs. But before I conclude blog, I want to leave
you with one very powerful story — because predictions may tell you what can
happen, but wisdom helps you understand how you should respond when it
happens. And that is especially important during this Mercury transit, because
now that Mercury has moved away from the confusing Rahu–Ketu axis, clarity is
returning — but clarity alone is not enough. The real question is: what are you
going to do with that clarity? Are you going to use your intelligence wisely, or
simply become more clever, calculative and manipulative? There is a beautiful
Sufi story that explains this difference better than any astrological explanation
can.
A famous Sufi story is that a ship is coming back to its home country. Suddenly
the ocean goes mad… great winds, and the ship is almost on the verge of sinking.
Everybody starts praying. At such a moment who will not pray? — even the
atheist will pray, the agnostic will pray, and pray, “Forgive what I have been
saying, it was all nonsense. Forgive me, but let me reach the shore.”
But the Sufi was simply sitting there, not praying. The people became angry; they
said, “You are a religious man, wearing the robe, the green robe of a Sufi. What
kind of a Sufi are you? You should have been the first to pray. And we are not
religious people, we are just business people, and to us this prayer is, too, nothing
but business. We are offering God, that ‘We will give you this, we will give you
that, just save us.’ Why are you sitting silently? Why are you not praying?”
He said, “You have already said it: because I am not a businessman. If he wants to
finish us all, good. If he wants to save us, good. I am in total agreement with him.
Why should I pray? For what? Prayer means some disagreement, something is
happening which you don’t want to happen. You want God to intercede, to
interfere, to stop it, to change it.”
The Sufi said, “I have no business of my own. It is his business to bother whether
to save or to drown us. If he wants this Sufi to be saved, it is his business, not my
business. And if he wants me to die, that is his business. I had not asked for birth;
suddenly I was here. I cannot ask about death. If birth is not in my control, how
can death be in my control?”
Those people thought, “This man is mad.” They said, “We will take care of you
later on. Let us get to the shore somehow and then we will take care of you. You
are not a Sufi, you are not religious; you are a very dangerous man. But this is not
the time to bother and quarrel with you.”
On board was the most wealthy, most famous man of the country, and he was
coming with millions of diamonds and precious stones. He had earned much. He
had a beautiful palace in the town — the most beautiful marble palace. Even the
king was jealous. Even the king had asked him many times, “You give this palace
to me — any price, and I will pay for it.”
But the madman, the rich man, said, “That is not possible. That palace is my
pride.” When the ship was almost sinking, the man shouted to God, “Listen, I give
that palace to you — just save me!” And as it happened, the winds disappeared,
the ocean became calm, the ship was saved. They reached the bank.
Now, the rich man was in a very difficult position because of what he had said.
And he had been angry with the Sufi — now he was not angry. He said, “Perhaps
you were right just to keep quiet. If I had followed you I would not have lost my
palace. But I am a businessman, and I will find a way.” And he found a way.
Next day he put the palace up for auction. He informed all the nearby kingdoms,
whoever was interested. Many kings, queens and rich people came; everybody
was interested. They were all puzzled to see that, just in front of the palace, there
was a cat chained to a marble pillar of the palace. The rich man came out and he
said, “This palace and the cat, both are up for auction together. The price of the
cat is one million dinars” — their dollars, one million dollars — “the price of the
cat one million dollars, and the price of the palace, one dollar: one million and
one dollars.”
The people said, “For this cat one million dollars, and for this palace just one
dollar?”
The businessman said, “You don’t bother about it. If you are interested, both are
going to be sold together. Less, I will not accept. If anybody is interested, this is my
minimum price.”
The king of the country said, “Yes, I will give you the price, but please tell me,
what is the secret of this cat and the palace?”
And he said, “No secret — I just got into trouble because of a prayer. I have told
God that ‘I will give you the palace.’ And I am a businessman; if he is a
businessman, I am also a businessman. The cat, one million dollars — that I will
keep. And the palace: one dollar — that will go to God’s fund.”
And my friends, this story looks humorous on the surface — but if you really
understand it, there are some very deep layers hidden inside it.
The first layer is about spirituality.
Look at the Sufi.
He was not trying to negotiate with existence.
He was not saying, “God, if you save me, I will do this.”
“If you solve my problem, I will donate that.”
“If you fulfil my desire, I will chant one lakh mantras.”
That is not surrender.
That is a business deal with God!
And unfortunately, many people approach spirituality exactly like businessmen.
They don’t pray because they love God.
They pray because they want something.
They don’t perform a remedy because they have understood themselves.
They perform a remedy because they want Saturn to stop troubling them, Rahu
to give them money, Jupiter to give them marriage, Venus to give them love!
And then we accuse the businessman in this story of being clever!
My friends, sometimes we are doing exactly the same thing — only our cat and
palace are different!
Now comes the second layer.
The businessman in this story is undoubtedly intelligent.
Look at the calculation!
One million dollars for the cat.
One dollar for the palace.
Technically, he kept his promise.
But was he truthful?
NO.
And this is where we must understand something very important about Mercury
in Virgo.
Mercury in Virgo can make you extremely sharp.
It can make you calculative.
It can make you analytical.
It can make you very good with numbers, documents, agreements, contracts and
loopholes.
But intelligence without consciousness can easily become cunningness.
And therefore the higher expression of Mercury is not simply:
“How can I beat the system?”
The higher expression of Mercury asks:
“What is the RIGHT thing to do?”
There is a huge difference.
Because sometimes the most intelligent person in the room is also the biggest fool
spiritually.
He knows how to save one million dollars…
but he loses his integrity.
He knows how to win the argument…
but loses the relationship.
He knows how to manipulate the contract…
but loses people’s trust.
He knows how to calculate profit…
but cannot calculate the damage he is doing to his own character.
That is incomplete Mercury.
And therefore as Mercury now moves into Virgo, after coming out of the
confusing influence of the Leo–Ketu and Aquarius–Rahu axis, clarity is
certainly going to return.
But what are you going to do with that clarity?
That is the real question.
Because clarity itself is neutral.
A knife in the hands of a surgeon saves somebody’s life.
The same knife in another man’s hands can destroy somebody’s life.
Similarly, intelligence can serve awareness…
or intelligence can serve greed.
Mercury in Virgo therefore asks you to become practical — but not crooked.
Become calculative — but not manipulative.
Become intelligent — but not dishonest.
Read the fine print — but don’t use the fine print to cheat somebody.
Protect your money — but don’t sell your conscience to protect your money.
Maintain accounts — but remember, my friends, there is another account being
maintained somewhere which does not work on Excel!
The account of Karma.
And Karma is a very strange accountant.
You may hide something from your CA.
You may hide something from your customer.
You may hide something from your partner.
You may even hide something from the Income Tax Department!
But how will you hide it from your own consciousness?
That is impossible.
And now see the contrast between the Sufi and the businessman.
The businessman wanted to CONTROL existence.
The Sufi was willing to FLOW with existence.
The businessman said:
“I will give something to God only if God gives something to me.”
The Sufi said:
“Whatever happens, I accept.”
Now this does not mean you should become passive.
This does not mean that when your business is collapsing you should sit quietly
and say, “God will take care of everything.”
NO!
That would again be stupidity.
This entire blog has been about being practical.
So if your business has a problem — fix it.
If your health has a problem — go to the doctor.
If your accounts have a problem — calculate.
If your relationship has a misunderstanding — communicate.
If a contract looks doubtful — investigate.
DO EVERYTHING THAT IS IN YOUR HANDS.
But after doing everything that is in your hands…
learn to surrender what is NOT in your hands.
And THAT, my friends, is the balance between Mercury and spirituality.
Use Mercury where Mercury is needed.
Use surrender where surrender is needed.
Don’t use surrender as an excuse for laziness.
And don’t use intelligence as an excuse for manipulation.
That is the middle path.
That is wisdom.
And perhaps this is the deepest message of Mercury transiting through Virgo
from 7th September to 26th September.
For the last few weeks, with Mercury caught around the Rahu–Ketu axis, many of
you may have experienced confusion, mixed signals, strange decisions,
unnecessary doubts, communication problems or situations where you simply
could not see the complete picture.
Now gradually the dust begins to settle.
Your mind starts saying:
“Okay… now I understand.”
“Now I can see what went wrong.”
“Now I know what needs to be done.”
And when that clarity comes — use it wisely.
Correct your accounts.
Correct your schedule.
Correct your health habits.
Correct your communication.
Correct your financial decisions.
Correct your professional mistakes.
And sometimes…
correct yourself.
Because Mercury in Virgo is not interested in protecting your ego.
It is interested in finding the error.
And once the error is found, don’t waste another three days proving why the
error was justified!
Simply correct it and move ahead.
That is intelligence.
That is maturity.
And that too, is spirituality.
Because ultimately true spirituality does not make you incapable of dealing with
this world.
True spirituality makes you so conscious that you know exactly when to
calculate, when to act, when to speak, when to remain silent — and finally,
when to surrender.
So during this Mercury transit, remember the businessman, remember the Sufi…
and please remember the poor cat also!
Don’t become so clever that in trying to save your palace…
you lose something far more valuable than the palace itself.
Be practical.
Be accurate.
Be intelligent.
But above everything else —
BE CONSCIOUS.
Jai Shri Ganesha. Jai Guru.
